Fatal Car Accidents On The Decline According To Penndot
February 10, 2015
Fatal car accidents on the decline, according to PennDoT
PennDoT recently published a report indicating that Pennsylvania roads and car accidents may no longer be as synonymous as they once were. Statistics displayed that, while nearly 1300 lost their lives in motor vehicle accidents in 2013, the numbers each year for car accidents and car accident deaths are steadily declining.
Although this is certainly good news, we cannot forget that people’s lives, or loss thereof, are the primary consideration. This PennDoT report is encouraging and displays that Pennsylvania roads are indeed becoming safer. However, they are still not safe enough. For nearly 1300 people to lose their lives in one year, this report hopefully indicates the beginning of a welcome trend.
Yet, more safety measures must still take hold. Remember, all of those fatal car accidents involved more than just the deceased. Family members, friends, acquaintances, and others were all negatively traumatized by these tragedies. Saving more lives in 2015 is the prime focus of PennDoT.
There are still troubling statistics to address. In 2013, for example, there were twenty-nine fatalities involving 16-year-old drivers, compared to nineteen deaths in 2012. Train and trolley fatality statistics are equally disturbing. In 2013, there were six deaths, while only one occurred in 2012.
Allegheny County recorded thirty car crash fatalities in 2012, compared to thirty-three in 2013. This and previously noted data does not include the numerous serious personal injuries that also occurred in Allegheny County and throughout Pennsylvania.
Important categories that recorded declining fatalities, included accidents involving drunk drivers, motorcyclists, bicyclists, and head-on crashes. Everyone hopes that this encouraging trend will continue. Time will tell us if this decline in fatalities will continue.
